Beyond Shopify: When Small Businesses Need Custom E-Commerce

From Craft Markets to Online Sales

Lumin Glass Art is a Hong Kong-based artisan creating handcrafted glass art — sculptures, portraits, and custom pieces. For years, sales happened through craft markets, Instagram DMs, and word of mouth. The business was growing, but the sales process was entirely manual.

The owner came to us wanting an online presence, but standard e-commerce templates didn't fit. Glass art isn't like selling t-shirts — each piece is unique, custom portraits require a consultation process, and the visual presentation needs to do justice to the craftsmanship.

Why Templates Didn't Work

We evaluated Shopify, Squarespace, and other platforms first. The issues:

  • Product presentation — template galleries didn't showcase the art well; we needed full-screen imagery with zoom, lighting details, and multiple angles
  • Custom ordering flow — portrait commissions require photo uploads, style selection, size consultation, and approval steps that no template supports
  • Pricing complexity — each piece has unique pricing based on size, complexity, and materials; standard "add to cart" doesn't work
  • Brand experience — template sites feel generic; an artisan brand needs a gallery-like experience

What We Built

Online Gallery

A curated gallery experience that lets the art speak:

  • Full-bleed images with zoom and detail views
  • Category browsing — sculptures, portraits, decorative pieces
  • Piece details — dimensions, materials, technique, and story behind each work
  • Filtered by availability — in stock, made to order, sold (for portfolio)

Portrait Commission Flow

The custom ordering process for portraits:

  1. Customer selects portrait style and size
  2. Uploads reference photos
  3. Artist reviews and provides quote
  4. Customer approves and pays deposit
  5. Artist creates and shares progress photos
  6. Final approval and remaining payment
  7. Shipping and delivery

This entire flow is managed through the platform — no WhatsApp back-and-forth needed.

Streamlined Checkout

For ready-made pieces, a clean checkout experience:

  • Simple cart with clear pricing
  • Hong Kong-specific payment methods (FPS, PayMe, credit card)
  • Local delivery options with real-time tracking
  • Gift wrapping and custom messages

The Impact

  • First direct sales channel — the business can now sell 24/7 without craft market appearances
  • Higher average order value — the premium presentation justifies premium pricing
  • Reduced admin work — the commission flow handles what used to be dozens of WhatsApp messages
  • Broader reach — customers from outside Hong Kong now discover and order pieces

The Lesson for Small Businesses

You don't need a massive budget to have custom e-commerce. The key is identifying which parts of your business need custom solutions and which parts can use standard tools. For Lumin Glass Art, the product presentation and commission flow needed to be custom — but payment processing and shipping used proven third-party services.

Custom doesn't mean building everything from scratch. It means building the parts that matter most to your specific business.
